Tianeptine

Indications
Oral
Depression
Adult: 12.5 mg tid.
Elderly: Dose reduction to total daily dose of 25 mg.
Renal impairment: Reduce total daily dose to 25 mg/day.

Special Populations: Patients with renal impairment: Total daily dose of 25 mg daily. No dose modification in patients with chronic alcoholism or cirrhosis.
Contraindications
Childn <15 yrs. Pregnancy and lactation.
Warnings / Precautions
General anaesthesia; tasks requiring mental alertness. Avoid abrupt withdrawal, dosage to be decreased gradually over 7-14 days.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain, fatigue, nausea, constipation, lack of appetite, insomnia, drowsiness, palpitations, muscular or joint pain, headache, vertigo, tremour, dry mouth, hepatitis (rare)
Overdose Reactions
Gastric lavage followed by symptomatic treatment and monitoring of CV, respiratory, metabolic and renal function.
Drug Interactions
Potentially Fatal: Avoid concurrent admin with MAOI, start tianeptine 2 wk after discontinuation from MAOI.

Food Interactions
Decreased absorption with alcohol.
Mechanism of Actions
Tianeptine exerts its antidepressant action by increasing the presynaptic re-uptake of serotonin.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach. (Take before main meals.)
