Indications |
Oral Intestinal or oropharyngeal candidiasis Adult: 500,000 or 1,000,000 units 3-4 times daily. Child: As oral suspension: 100,000 units 4 times daily. Oral Oral candidiasis Adult: As pastilles or oral suspension; 100,000 units 4 times daily (US recommendation 200,000-400,000 units as lozenges or 400,000-600,000 units as oral suspension 4 times daily). Keep in contact with affected area for as long as possible. Avoid food and drink for 1 hr after dose. Continue for 48 hr after lesions have healed. Child: >1 mth: As pastilles or oral suspension; 100,000 units 4 times daily (US recommendation 200,000-400,000 units as lozenges or 400,000-600,000 units as oral suspension 4 times daily). Keep in contact with affected area for as long as possible. Avoid food and drink for 1 hr after dose. Continue for 48 hr after lesions have healed. Oral Prophylaxis of intestinal candidiasis Adult: 1,000,000 units daily in divided doses. Child: Infants, as oral suspension: 100,000 units daily. Vaginal Vaginal candidiasis Adult: 100,000-200,000 units daily for 14 days as pessaries or vaginal cream. Topical/Cutaneous Cutaneous or mucocutaneous mycotic infections Adult: As ointment, gel, cream, or dusting powder containing 100,000 units/g: apply 2-4 times daily. Child: As ointment, gel, cream, or dusting powder containing 100,000 units/g: apply 2-4 times daily. |

Adverse Reactions |
Diarrhoea, GI distress, nausea and vomiting. vaginal pessaries/cream: May damage latex contraceptives (e.g. diaphragms, condoms), additional contraceptive measures should be taken. Topical application: Irritation. |
Food Interactions |
Oral suspension/drops: Reduced efficacy if food/drink taken within 1 hr of drug admin. |
Mechanism of Actions |
Nystatin, a polyene antifungal, binds to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane. This binding affects the cell wall permeability allowing leakage of cellular contents. |
