Indications |
Subcutaneous Active immunisation against measles Adult: Single dose of 0.5 ml. For post exposure prophylaxis: Dose should be given within 72 hr of contact. Child: ≥12 mth: Single dose of 0.5 ml. 2nd dose to be given prior to entry into elementary school. Children who received the 1st dose before 12 mth should be given another dose at 12-15 mth old, followed by another dose before entry into elementary school. Reconstitution: Use only the diluent supplied. Incompatibility: Preservatives, antiseptics and detergents may inactivate the live virus vaccine. |
Contraindications |
Hypersensitivity to any component e.g. gelatin or neomycin. Pregnancy. Febrile respiratory illness or active febrile infection. Patients on immunosuppressive therapy. HIV-positive patients with immunosuppression. Severe primary immunodeficiency. Patients with blood dyscrasias, malignant neoplasms affecting the bone marrow or lymphatic systems. |
Warnings / Precautions |
Cerebral injury or history of convulsions. Hypersensitivity to eggs. Thrombocytopenia. Ensure that vaccine is not admin into the blood vessels. Defer vaccination for ≥3 mth following blood or plasma transfusions or admin of human immune globulin. Lactation. |
Adverse Reactions |
Fever, rash, syncope, dizziness, malaise, irritability, headache, atypical measles, vasculitis, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, arthralgia, myalgia, pneumonitis, cough, rhinitis, local reactions, deafness, retinitis. Potentially Fatal: Encephalitis, thrombocytopenia, anaphylaxis and anaphylactoid reactions. |
Drug Interactions |
Do not give <1 mth before or after the admin of other live vaccines. Do not give concurrently with immune globulin. See Below for More vaccine, measles Drug Interactions |
Mechanism of Actions |
Measles vaccines are used for active immunisation against measles. Measles strains currently used in vaccines are usually the more attenuated Enders' attenuated Edmonston strain or the Schwarz strain. |
