Indications |
Oral Sore throat Adult: Per loz contains 1.4 mg cetylpyridinium chloride: 1 loz every 3 hr. Allow loz to dissolve slowly in the mouth. Child: >6 yr: Per loz contains 1.4 mg cetylpyridinium chloride: 1 loz every 3 hr. Allow loz to dissolve slowly in the mouth. Oral Mouth and throat infections Adult: Per loz contains 1.4 mg cetylpyridinium chloride: 1 loz every 3 hr. Allow loz to dissolve slowly in the mouth. Child: >6 yr: Per loz contains 1.4 mg cetylpyridinium chloride: 1 loz every 3 hr. Allow loz to dissolve slowly in the mouth. Mouth/Throat Mouth and throat infections Adult: As mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium chloride 0.025% w/v: Gargle or rinse with at least 15 ml. Repeat 2-3 times daily. No need to dilute the solution. Child: >6 yr: As mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium chloride 0.025% w/v: Gargle or rinse with at least 15 ml. Repeat 2-3 times daily. No need to dilute the solution. Topical/Cutaneous Antiseptic and disinfectant Adult: As gel containing cetylpyridinium chloride 0.025% w/w: Apply onto the affected area 2-3 times daily. |
Warnings / Precautions |
For oral loz: If sore throat persists for >3 days, patient should seek medical advice. For topical gel: Avoid prolonged and repeated application as hypersensitivity may occur; do not use on skin that is weeping or badly inflamed. Safety has not been established in pregnancy and lactation. |
Adverse Reactions |
For oral loz: Urticaria, burning sensation of the mouth. For topical gel: Skin irritation, hypersensitivity reactions. |
Overdose Reactions |
Accidental ingestion of the topical gel is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity but it may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Treatment should be symptomatic. |
Mechanism of Actions |
Cetylpyridinium chloride is a quaternary pyridinium antiseptic. It is commonly used as lozenges or solutions for the treatment of minor infections of the mouth and throat. It may also be used topically for the treatment of skin and eye infections. |
