Lovastatin vs Gemfibrozil |
Security Level |
|
Mechanism |
Gemfibrozil: May enhance the myopathic (rhabdomyolysis) effect of Lovastatin. Gemfibrozil may increase the serum concentration of Lovastatin. More specifically, gemfibrozil may increase the serum concentrations of lovastatin acid (active form of parent drug). |
Management |
If possible, avoid concomitant use of lovastatin and gemfibrozil or consider using micronized fenofibrate instead of gemfibrozil. If gemfibrozil use can not be avoided, limit lovastatin to 20 mg/day and closely monitor for signs of rhabdomyolysis. |
